The Kickstarter Thread - What are you backing?

John Steed brilliantly suggested we should have a Kickstarter thread for us junkies who like to buy some of our books that way, help out an independent artist realize their dream (and make a nice dollar or two), and maybe get a few cool books in the process. So here's ones I'm backing right now:

Get in on this one, folks. It's mushroomed from simple graphic novel tpb format to omnibus sized hardcover with a slipcase. The art and story look like it's gonna be a fun read, and the guy's made enough bread that he's been donating the excess to things like Hero Initiative and Renae De Liz, etc.

Also you only have today to do this - so get on it! Seriously, this book looks to be brilliant!

I like cute things, and I'm comfortable enough in my masculinity to admit it. I missed out on Volume 1, but thankfully one of his options is to get volumes 1 AND 2 autographed with a sketch in them. I'm in. I think the missus is going to dig this one as well.

I love LOVE LOVE Mark Dos Santos' artwork...and if you skim this page you'll see why. This book needs to HAPPEN, people! If he's at your convention RUN don't walk to pick up his stuff! It's really reasonable price wise and looks absolutely beautiful.

John - thanks! I really dig his stuff...he has some fun ideas and "borrows" from some of the best (Mucha, Rockwell) to create familiarity with some of the characters I already love. He's pretty close now and I'm sure he'll make the goal, but every bit helps!

The Boo-Monster is based on my son, David, who lives his life with low-functioning autism. He is my best friend, greatest teacher, and, quite frankly, my whole world. So I felt it only fair that I create a whole world for him.

Legends of the Boo-Monster” is the fantasy story of a little monster who has a developmental disability known as the “Distance”, which would be our world's version of autism. For over three centuries the Continent of Monsters was a place where diverse and amazing creatures lived in harmony, but now an ancient prophecy is being fulfilled and a group of other-dimensional baddies known as the Intolerance are going to try to make the Continent their own. The Boo-Monster is the center of the prophecy due to his “dimensional frequency”, so the greatest monsters of the Continent gather to protect the Boo-Monster and the peaceful world they’ve always known.

HE DID IT! As of now, Shawn has $5,015 and he still has 11 days to go. All he needed was $5,000. I am so jazzed that he was able to get this project off the ground. YAY SHAWN!

@Greg The only thing about Sedition Wars is that you are paying a premium to fund the game. That game will be sold for less than the incentive level to get it. I mean it is nice to do and there is a print but in reality it isn't much of a deal. I never expect a crazy deal for supporting something but I think they could have done like $50-75 max for the boxed game incentive for supporters. That sometimes turns me off of a project.

Speaking of which the Cerebus project has started to irk me a bit. Now that they have all this money they are using it to do everything under the sun instead of just focusing on the project. Worrying about now taking 4 times as long to scan at ridiculous levels so they can sell future HCs in 11x17 format and stuff that has nothing to do with the actual project but future projects. That stuff bugs me and is one of my bigger issues with Kickstarter, it seems to happen more and more as projects get funded multiple times over more and more and then the scope creep and sprawl gets ridiculous and they lose sight of what the whole point was.

@Zhurrie - I totally agree with you. There should have been some lower level options and the lack there of irked me quite a bit. I didn't know about the project myself until last night when a friend told me about it. The game had already met its goal by several thousands so I just kicked in a few bucks because I'm a genuine fan and supporter of Mike.

In almost all but the rarest of cases I want something tangible for my donation, and I like to get something reasonable at a discount from the average Joe since I am fronting them money and making their profitable venture possible. Wholesale rates are usually around 50% of MSRP so at least sell it to me for around that since any store out there will be buying the same item at that price with no donation or support up front.

Some projects get this really right and others really seem to have a hard time with it. I pass on projects with poor structure because if you can't get that basic bit right I have some reservations on the whole project. There was a cool videogame project recently but the incentives were useless in-game only vanity crap and not even the game itself as an option at any level. I'm right out in those cases.

@John_Steed, I'd love to know who beat everyone to the punch on that Scott Radke marionette. I'd have loved to own that. I have been a long time collector of a number of these artists and it is a cool project, the only issue is that this group has become very incestuous as far as styles and work which has slowly been a bit of a letdown. menton3 is a pretty bad straight rip of Templesmith and Wood but they all stick closely together and in a lot of projects more and more. My personal and professional beef with Ashley Wood is another whole ball of wax but he is truly a despicable human and I have a hard time supporting him or his work even in a minor way like this.

A few years ago I'd have been in at the absolute top level on something like this, but even now I'll still probably pick a copy up because there are so many other great folks... Templesmith, Pratt, Rossmo, Radke, Niles, and Sienkiewicz.

@John_Steed I know I have seen this project now in a ton of art forums/sites I frequent and in some online chatter with a few artists and it is really cool... I just wish Ashley Wood wasn't on it. I love how they top billed him but he didn't even bother a Skype plug for the project like every other artist did. I have a feeling this will be printed by IDW based on the two books shown so it will be decent quality. I think this project/series has massive potential to grow going forward.

I'm in for the $75 because I want the explicitus est liber book too.

With 2 hours before it ends I actually canceled my Cerebus pledge. Crazy I know. I actually really don't like the direction it all started to head in when the funding got really high. I will be bummed to miss out on the Eastman print but that is about it. I'd rather give the funds to a more deserving project... I just checked out kickstarter for the first time. I've heard talk of it on podcasts.
This is such an amazing idea what a great way for the comic community to support some awesome and inventive creators get their creations out there.

Side question: I've never been able to get a firm handle on this, but does the money go towards paying the creators working on the book, or the printing/con appearance/advertising costs of the book?

It is basically up to the individual/team what they do with the funds. Especially when projects get funded over 100%. Some really do amazingly and try to give back and make the product better or give extras, etc. and others just mostly pocket it and come up with lame extras. The other thing a lot of people don't realize is that there is pretty much a 50% hit between taxes and fees and I've also seen people horribly misjudge international shipping/interest and that has killed them.

I'm a big fan of Kickstarter and funding creative pursuits in general but lately I have been waiting until closer to the end on projects that are 100% funded or over 100% quickly to see how it all shakes out and what levels will get extras, etc. I have only ever pulled out of one project (Cerebus) because I just didn't agree and feel comfortable with how things unfolded late in the game with respect to the funds. People are getting more savvy with Kickstarter and good or bad some precedents have been set and some cookie-cutter approaches which I like less than more freeform and individual approaches as before.

Yeah, that's what's got me holding off on the Moy one. The art looks really good and I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff (*hurr hurr*) but I think it's going to be in the "keep an eye on it" file for a week or so.
